Don't even think about ordering a non-illustrated version of this short classic chapter book having superb black-and -white artwork that added immensely to this clever story. Loved the manner in which tortoises talked, tigers were tricked, rhinos were restrained and crocodiles were crossed. Be certain you purchase the Open Road edition ASIN B071GQ4P1M as all I can say further is that I especially enjoyed this kindle book and am definitely going to be looking out for more of Ruth Stiles Gannett's works!
This is not the official printing of the book and it is not the same size as the two others in the series that I ordered so I could not give this as a gift. Disappointed that it is not clearly marked unofficial/re-print.
It's hard for me to give this book one star because it's so phenomenal but I felt I needed to warn people off from buying it here. This is NOT an official print of the book, it is a printed copy (the cover is fuzzy, etc — it's clearly not from the original publishing house it looks like it was run off at Kinkos). Absolutely buy this book, just not here.
I bought this book (along with the others in the series) for my nieces. While the book itself is great, the publishing of this particular version was horribly unprofessional-looking. Pictures, fonts, etc. were blurry and looked as though they had been cut-and-paste from a screenshot (which they likely were). The entire book was physically larger than the others in the series (which were clearly from the original publisher and much higher quality, probably because it needed to accommodate the 8"x11" paper that they clearly printed out on a printer and folded in half for the pages. I didn't realize I was buying a "knock-off" version of the book and would have paid more for the original version had I realized it. Was almost too embarrassed to gift it to my nieces...but did since I knew the story was great.
Our daughters (5, 4, and 2) would not let me put this book down! "Just ONE more chapter, mom!" We are looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

I'm a fairly "conservative" parent (we don't watch shows, etc, that have disrespectful children or language) and I was okay with this book- mainly because we were reading it together, and so if the character's statement or attitude became questionable, we would pause and discuss it or go over, "Hmm, what would be a better way to say that?" or, "Do you think that was a wise choice?" But even with that said, nothing that made me think of putting the book down.
Buyer beware Be careful of exactly which edition you are buying. The one I received looks like it was printed at home. The cover of the book is blurry, like it was photocopied, as are all of the illustrations inside. The text and layout of the book looks like a hobbyist formatted it. I'm actually surprised an imposter product like this is allowed to be sold on .
Avoid this createspace print version. It's not a professionally printed text - instead it's print on demand, and the cover is out of focus, the size is not original, and the print is overlarge. Spend a little more money on the version that is not reprinted from the public domain. This beautiful classic is worth the extra few dollars.
